EID MUBARAK
Sunnah of Eid-ul-Adha
The festival of Eid on the 10th of Dhulhijjah is one of the two celebrated days of the year in the Islamic calender. The sacrifices of animals (qurbani) are made on this day and the meat distributed amongst the poor and needy. Here are some sunnah acts that you can perform on Eid-ul-Adha.
1. Taking a Bath
Cleanliness is half of faith. It is also the sunnah of our beloved Prophet Muhammad ﷺ to take a bath or perform ghusl in preparation for Eid. Ibn ’Abbas narrated, “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to have a bath on the day of Fitr and the day of Adha.” [Ibn Majah]
2. Wearing Best Clothes (and Perfume for Men)
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was known to have worn his best cloak for the two Eids. Anas bin Malik said: “The Prophet ordered us to wear a good dress for Eid, to use the best perfume we have, and to give charity with what we have as the most valuable.” [Al-Hakim].
3. Eating After the Eid Prayer
Abdullah ibn Buraidah said, “The Messenger of Allah did not go out on the day of Eid ul-Fitr until he had eaten, and he did not eat on the day of Eid-ul-Adha until he came back, then he would eat from his sacrifice.” [At-Tirmidhi]
4. Going to Eid Prayer
The Prophet ﷺ commanded the people to go out to the Eid prayer, both men and women. Umm ‘Atiyyah said: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded us to bring them (women) out on (Eid) al-Fitr and (Eid) al-Adha, and to bring out adolescent girls, menstruating women and virgins, but the menstruating women were to stay away from the prayer, but were to witness goodness and the gathering of the Muslims.” [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]
5. Greet One Another
Congratulate each other with greetings such as ‘Eid Mubarak’. Jubayr ibn Nufayr said: “When the companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ met one another on the day of Eid, they would say to one another: ‘Taqabbal Allaahu minna wa mink (May Allah accept [this worship] from us and from you).'” Ibn hajar said its isnaad is hasan.
6. Take Different Path
As narrated by Jabir bin Abdullah, “On the Day of Eid, the Prophet ﷺ used to return after offering the Eid prayer through a way different from that by which he went.” [Al-Bukhari]. The reason behind this is that on the Day of Judgement, the two paths will testify that you attended this salah.
7. Sacrifice and Charity
Prophet Muhammad ﷺ openly encouraged Muslims to eat from the meat of their sacrifices on Eid ul-Adha. Aisha narrated that the Prophet said, “Eat some, store some and give some in charity.” [Muslim]
8. Enjoying the Food and Drink
The days of Eid are not for fasting. In fact, Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: “The days of at-Tashreeq are days of eating, drinking and remembering Allah.” [Muslim]
